Nic Brown "All My Friends" is DJ Sonikku's second EP for Distant Hawaii, Lobster Theremin's offshoot for the sun-streaked, barbecue-scented Balearic acts on its exponentially increasing roster. The kicks on "All My Friends" land that little bit harder than they did on predecessor "Secret Island" suggesting a move from manning the 4am chill out booth to party mainstay, sharing the same dune tune platform with DJs from labels like Mark Barrott's renowned International Feel. Well, we can dream, as I intend to do to EP favourite "Sand Oasis" which blends thumping kicks with psychoactive melodies as it has since house DJs became Ibiza's equivalent of conquistadors. Favorite track: Sand Oasis.

about

After a tropical storm powered by gaming-vengeance battered the long lost Secret Island, our young protagonist DJ Sonikku - ruffled but not deterred, having drifted for months on a bird-nested raft - finds himself landing on the shores of New York City. Megadrive chip intact, mates along for the ride, and a half century of electronic heritage soaked up in a flash - All My Friends is the culmination of Sonikku's mental and spiritual journey into his own version of a hyperreal NYC.

A regular feature of the Sonikku homeland and epic structural facet, Chemical Plant is soaked and squeezed with just the right amount of Italo and disco, layered over a stocky 16-bit house groove and a slap heavy FM bass-line.

Sand Oasis is less about the nostalgic and more about Sonikku now. Beach-tanned drum warmth cracks, pops and whistles in and among sugar-coated, sweet-as-a-nut synth melodies and a rolling 'n' tumbling bass bump.

Hogging the B-side but to maximum effect, Untitled (Club Use) is a full on music-as-the-medium club statement. A longing and yearning to have have witnessed and being immersed in thriving 80's and 90's New York scene, drawing a distinctive and direct influence from Shep Pettibone and Junior Vasquez. Pure floor-flattening heat riding hard on a Jersey-edged drum shuffle and tightly-chopped vocal flourishes.
